Golf Cart Ordinance

As the use of golf carts has grown in popularity for local transportation, the Village of Elida has established an ordinance to govern their legal and safe operation within village limits. This ordinance outlines the requirements for inspection, registration, licensing, insurance, and where golf carts may or may not be driven.

Residents who wish to operate a golf cart on public streets must comply with Ohio state motor vehicle standards and additional local rules. This includes obtaining an inspection from the Elida Police Department, securing registration and license plates, and following specific operating guidelines such as seat belt use, permitted routes, and child safety.

Key Highlights of the Ordinance:

  • Golf carts must be inspected and approved by the Chief of Police (or designee)

  • Valid driver’s license, registration, and insurance are required

  • Operation is only allowed on streets with speed limits of 25 mph or lower

  • Seat belts are required for all passengers; child restraint laws apply

  • Standing on or overloading golf carts is prohibited

  • Special event exemptions may be granted with prior approval
