Code Enforcement

The Village of Elida is committed to maintaining a safe, healthy, and welcoming environment for all residents and businesses. Our Code Enforcement program plays a vital role in upholding property standards, zoning regulations, and public safety ordinances that help preserve the character and quality of life in our neighborhoods.

What Does Code Enforcement Do?

Our Code Enforcement Officer is responsible for:

  • Investigating complaints related to property maintenance, zoning, and nuisance issues
  • Working with property owners to resolve violations
  • Enforcing local ordinances related to:
      • Weeds, tall grass, and yard maintenance
      • Abandoned or inoperable vehicles
      • Trash or debris accumulation
      • Building maintenance and structural safety
      • Zoning violations (such as improper land use or signage)
      • Unpermitted construction or occupancy

The goal of our enforcement program is compliance through education and cooperation, not punishment. In most cases, property owners are given a reasonable timeframe to correct violations before further action is taken.

Reporting a Concern

If you see something that may be a code violation, you can report it to the Village for investigation. Common issues that can be reported include:

  • Overgrown lots or vacant properties
  • Trash or debris in yards
  • Unpermitted home additions or accessory structures
  • Illegal signs or fencing

To report a code concern, contact Elida’s Code Enforcement Officer at 419-339-2811 or use our Report an Issue form.
